With the summer travel season underway, state leaders are warning of a new scam tactic targeting travelers’ personal information on their electronic devices. In a warning issued this week, the New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection encouraged travelers to protect themselves against so-called “juice jacking” on public charging stations. 10-Digit Dialing Will Soon Be Required From Locals Calls In Parts Of Hudson Valley, Long Island
Get ready to re-program your phone as 10-digit dialing is soon coming to parts of the Hudson Valley and Long Island. The change, which begins Saturday, April 24, was announced by The Federal Communications Commission in this month's phone bills. The reason behind the change is the FCC has adopted 988 as a new three-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline starting Friday, July 16. Robocalls continue to be a scourge for New Yorkers, with millions of callers being flooded by calls “at all hours of the day and night.” In April, New Yorkers received 290.3 million robocalls, which is an average of 112 calls per second and 11 calls per New Yorker. The Village Manager’s office has been “spoofed” in Scarsdale, and local residents have been receiving calls from scammers using that number to feign legitimacy. NY Attorney General Joins Effort Urging Federal Action To Stop Robocalls
New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood has joined a coalition of elected officials calling on the Federal Communications Commission to create new regulations allowing telephone service providers to block robocalls. Last year, at the urging of a coalition of Attorneys General, the FCC granted phone service providers authority to block certain illegal spoofed robocalls.
