WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The winter sports season officially opens Monday with practice commencing in wrestling, basketball, bowling, swimming and track and field. Last Monday, ice hockey had a head start, beginning workouts. The 2010-11 winter sports season had three basketball teams win state championships -- the Peekskill (Class A) and Irvington (Class B) girls basketball teams and the Mount Vernon (Class AA) boys basketball team. Ossining, the defending Section 1 Class AA girls champs, returns one of its top players, not only in the section but also in the state. Junior two guard Soniya Chong, who surpassed 1,000 varsity points last year, will look to lead Ossining to a second consecutive title. Fox Lane is the defending Section 1 Large-School wrestling champion. The Foxes had a state titlist last year in Steven Rodrigues, who is at Rutgers. The Foxes also return two state finalists -- Danny Ventura (119 pounds) and Sam Speno (112 pounds) -- and a sectional finalist in Matt Pasqualini (145 pounds). Somers senior Brian Realbuto won his second large-school state wrestling title last year. Realbuto, who has committed to Cornell University, will attempt to become Section 1s first five-time sectional champion and three-time state titlist. Dylan Realbuto, Brians younger brother, was also a state finalist last year.
