Several former basketball players from Westchester high schools have the privilege of participating in this years NCAA Division I Mens Basketball Tournament.
After the first few days of action, some have advanced to the next round, while others were sent home early. Here is a complete rundown of all the familiar faces who have taken courts across the country in pursuit of a national championship.
Tuesday-Thursday:
Iona Rashad James (White Plains): The Gaels blew the largest lead in NCAA Tournament history in a First Four game on Tuesday against BYU. Iona led by 25 but BYU rallied to win, 78-72. James had seven points, five rebounds and two assists off the bench.
Vermont Brian Voelkel and Sandro Carissimo (Iona Prep): The Catamounts defeated Lamar, 71-59, in a First Four game on Wednesday. Voelkel led the team in rebounds and assists with 12 and seven, respectively, and added three points. Carissimo had 10 points. Voelkel and Carissimo played by far the most minutes for Vermont with 36 and 35, respectively. The Catamounts will face top-seeded North Carolina at 4:10 p.m.
Kansas State Jordan Henriquez (Port Chester): The eighth-seeded Wildcats narrowly defeated Southern Miss, 70-64, on Thursday to advance to the next round and face top-seeded Syracuse. Henriquez scored 15 points and led the team in rebounds and blocks with nine and six, respectively. He was also 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Syracuse Matt Lyde-Cajuste (Iona Prep): The Orange avoided an historic upset against UNC-Asheville, 72-65. Top-seeded Syracuse almost became the first team in the history of the tournament to lose to a 16 seed. Lyde-Cajuste, a walk-on for the Orange, did not play in the game.
West Virginia Kevin Jones and Jabarie Hinds (Mount Vernon): It was a very quick tournament experience for the Mountaineers, who were blown out by Gonzaga, 77-54. Jones finished with 13 points, while Hinds scored just one. Jones added four rebounds and Hinds had three.
Loyola (MD) Jhared Hall (Blessed Sacrament): Hall did not play in Loyolas 78-59 loss to second-seeded Ohio State.
Friday:
Cincinnati Sean Kilpatrick (White Plains, Notre Dame Prep): Kilpatrick and the Bearcats are the sixth seed in the East Region and will face 11th-seeded Texas at 12:15 p.m. Kilpatrick, the starting shooting guard for Cincinnati, led the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game.
Lehigh Conroy Baltimore (Stepinac): Baltimore and the Mountain Hawks are the 15 seed in the South region and will face second-seeded Duke at 7:15 p.m.
