The euphoria of a miracle last-inning victory in the Section 1 Class B semifinal Tuesday came back to haunt the Valhalla Vikings on Wednesday when they were on the losing side of the identical scenario.
Lou Carafiellos two- run single in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday completed a come-from-behind victory as Briarcliff defeated Valhalla for the Section 1 Class B championship. The game was played at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill.
Briarcliff will now advance to the New York State Public Schools regional round next week.
The top-seeded Briarcliff Bears trailed 5-1 in the sixth inning but scored four times to tie the No. 2 seed Valhalla Vikings, who mounted a miraculous comeback of their own in Tuesdays 6-5 victory over Hastings in the semifinals. Joe Lovecchio's three-run homer run won the semifinal for Valhalla game.
Spencer Kulan drove in two runs for the Bears and teammate Ryan Huegel had two hits, one a home run.
Mark DeMilio had three hits for the Vikings, who won the 2010 Section 1 Class C title but moved up to Class B this season. Valhalla finished the season with a record of 17-5.
