Valhalla Falls to Blind Brook in Lopsided Loss

RYE BROOK, N.Y. – The Blind Brook Trojans celebrated their homecoming weekend in style with a 41-12 rout of the Valhalla Vikings on Saturday.

After a pregame ceremony in which the senior football players and cheerleaders gave roses to their parents, the Trojans (6-1) went to work quickly and never looked back. Valhalla (2-5) gave up several big plays that put them in a deep hole.

Valhalla fumbled twice to squash any momentum they had started to build on offense. Those turnovers and similar errors plagued the Vikings, and head coach Kevin Martins knew it. “We’re a young team. We make a lot of mental mistakes and we made those tonight,” Martins said. “It’s what’s hurt us all season long.”

Trojans’ quarterback Jaime Ketchabaw ran into the end zone early in the first quarter to put Blind Brook ahead, 7-0.  After that run, the Trojans continued to add to their lead. Senior running back Nick Megdanis scored on a 13-yard run toward the end of the first quarter.

Senior quarterback Michael Kulik added a 21-yard touchdown pass to Frank DiCostanzo in the second quarter to give Blind Brook a 21-0 lead. Two field goals by Andre Alves and a touchdown hauled in by Kulik put the Trojans up, 34-0. Valhalla finally ended the potential shutout in the fourth quarter when freshman Christian Alvarado busted a 33-yard run for six points.

Blind Brook quickly answered back with a 55-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back David Oppizzi to give Blind Brook its largest lead of the night, 41-6. Valhalla ended the scoring with another touchdown at the 5:19 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Vikings fielded a team made up largely of freshman and sophomores. Though a team never wants a lopsided loss, Martins said the sting of such a defeat will be useful when they become seniors.

"We started the season knowing…we were going to be young and kind of expected to have these kinds of nights,” Martins said. “The kids get it. They didn’t give up in the second half. This is going to benefit them.”
