UConn’s men’s basketball program hasn’t been the same since it left the Big East Conference seven years ago.

Now it appears the Huskies will leave the American Athletic Conference and be back in the Big East for all sports except football, according to multiple reports. The news that the invitation to rejoin the conference could come as early as next week was first reported by Digital News Desk.

UConn is expected to be the 11th member of the "new" Big East starting with the 2020-21 season. The Big East would move to a format of 20 league games in men's and women's basketball, continuing its home-and-home regular-season format.

UConn was part of the Big East since its inception in 1979. The conference's seven non-football schools (all Catholic institutions) – DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall, and Villanova – announced that they had voted unanimously to separate from the Big East football-playing schools, effective June 30, 2015. In addition to those seven colleges, Xavier, Creighton and Butler joined the "new" Big East.

It's unclear what conference the UConn football team would play in since the Big East does not have teams competing in the sport. The Huskies' football went 1-11 and 0-8 in the AAC last season.
