Sleepy Hollow/Irvington Overtakes Byram Hills, 5-3

WEST NYACK, N.Y. -- Sleepy Hollow/Irvington came out flying in the third period of its high school hockey game with Byram Hills Wednesday.

The Legends had a one-goal lead three times during the first two periods, only to have the Bobcats even the score. The Legends wanted to grab the lead for the final time and planned on keeping it.

Kevin Halpin would provide the decisive goal and goalie Brett Pesce made it stand as Sleepy Hollow/Irvington defeated Byram Hills, 5-3 at the Palisades Center Ice Rink. The Legends improve to 3-10 on the season, but are 3-3 in their last six games. Halpin had a hat trick and assisted on linemate Jake Warren’s two goals.

Halpin netted the eventual game-winning goal 5:22 into the third period, snapping a wrist shot from a couple of strides inside the blue line. He used a Byram Hills’ defenseman as a screen.

The Legends had five quality scoring chances in the opening 70 seconds of the third period, only to have Byram Hills’ goalie Andrei Isichenko turn all aside.

“Our captains are strong leaders and they always get us motivated and fired up,” said Halpin, a senior at Irvington High School. “Going into the third period, our coach told us to keep working hard, capitalize on open opportunities and finish at the net.”

Once the Legends took the lead, Pesce took over, halting numerous Byram Hills’ attempts to even the score.

“Brett is a really strong goalie and we feel very confident with him,” Halpin said. “We just have to help him more and clean up the rebounds.”

Halpin opened the scoring two minutes into the game but the Bobcats answered back on a Zach O’Shea goal. Warren gave the Legends their second lead of the game, later in the period, only to have Nicholas Dominguez scored the first of his two goals, assisted by Joe Brigante and Rob Grander.

Warren’s power-play goal 1:53 into the second period was matched by a Dominguez man-up goal 10 minutes later.

With the win, Halpin said the team kept its playoff hopes alive.

“We’re fighting for a play-off spot and we have five or six games left so we have to keep working and playing hard and win a few of those games, at least,” Halpin said.
