Section 1 Wrestling Championships Continue Sunday

Fox Lane will be aiming to defend its Division I title while Edgemont looks to win its first Division II crown at the Section 1 Wrestling Championships/New York State Qualifier Saturday and Sunday.

The Division I (large school) championships will be hosted by Clarkstown South on Saturday beginning 9 a.m. The Division II (small school) championships will be at Croton on Saturday, also starting at 9 a.m. Wrestling, for both divisions will resume with the semifinals on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Goldstein Center on the campus of Pace University in Pleasantville. The finals are scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The champions in each weight class receive an automatic berth in the New York State Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25 at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Since New York State adopted the two-division format in 2004, Fox Lane has won four championships. Edgemont will attempt to break defending champion Nanuet’s monopoly on the small-school title. Nanuet has won four of the eight titles since 2004. Last year, Nanuet shaded Edgemont to win the team title.

The Foxes boast three No. 1 seeds -- two-time sectional champ and 2011 state finalist Sam Speno (126 pounds), 2011 state finalist Danny Ventura (132) and Matt Pasqualini (160) -- and a second seed in Tommy Grippi (138).

New Rochelle and Somers each have a pair of top seeds. The Huguenots have Aaron Butler (170), the 2011 160-pound champion, and Nick Barbaria (99) atop their respective weight classes. Brian Realbuto (152), who will be going for a Section 1-record fifth title, and Dom DeVita (220) are seeded first in their respective weight classes.

Edgemont’s Aslanian brothers -- Trey (113) and Tyler (99) -- are seeded first, as is Danny Kornberg (220).
