Section 1 County Basketball Championships Recap

A wild week of action at the Westchester County Center culminated in the crowning of nine champions in five classes in boys and girls basketball.

On the boys’ side, Mount Vernon won the Class AA Championship for the seventh consecutive year and 29th time in school history. Both are Section 1 records. The top-seeded Knights defeated third-seeded Mahopac, 77-51, on Sunday.

Tappan Zee continued its undefeated season with a 50-45 win against Poughkeepsie in the Class A Championship. Tappan Zee defeated upstart Poughkeepsie, 50-45, on Sunday.

Albertus Magnus won the Class B Championship, 66-48, over Dobbs Ferry, which was not at full strength thanks to a one-game suspension served by Eric Paschall, perhaps the Eagles’ best player. Paschall was whistled for two technical fouls in the Eagles’ semifinal win over Blind Brook and had to sit out on the championship per state rules.

Tuckahoe beat Children’s Village, 80-58, in the Class C Championship to continue its undefeated season. The Biondi School came back to win the Class D Championship, 69-59, against Greenburgh Academy, but Section 1 officials stripped the Lions of the title on Sunday because Lance McDowdell was ruled an ineligible player.

The No. 1 seeds in each class won their respective tournaments.

For the girls, Ossining routed Our Lady of Lourdes, 79-48, in the Class AA Championship as Saniya Chong scored her 2,000th point.

In Class A, Pearl River defeated Tappan Zee, 39-33. Irvington captured its third straight Class B Championship with a 68-33 win over Blind Brook. And Hamilton defeated Keio, 60-23, to win its first Class C Championship. Hamilton had not won a title since it won the Class D Championship in 1988.

As with the boys, all four No. 1 seeds in the girls’ classes won their tournaments.
