VALHALLA, N.Y. Coming into the current high school boys swimming season, Michael Lu and his Scarsdale teammates were cautiously optimistic.
Lu said the team had a lot of success last year and was confident in its abilities this year, but the Raiders did not want to be overconfident.
Scarsdale has built on the success it had last season as the Raiders remained undefeated with a 101-80 victory over the combined team of Briarcliff/Byram Hills/Pleasantville/Valhalla/Westlake in a swim meet Wednesday at Westchester Community College.
The Raiders ran their record 9-0 and will close out the regular season against Keio.Lu was a double winner in the 200 individual medley, with a time of 2 minutes 6.6 seconds, and the 100 freestyle, clocking in at 49.35 seconds. Lu also swam the anchor led on the winning 200 freestyle relay team. Dan Needham also won two events the 200 freestyle (1:52.09) and the 500 free (5:18.3).
We had a lot of strong freshmen and sophomores who improved significantly coming into this season, said Lu, who is planning to attend an Ivy League school and continue swimming next year. This year we have a really strong group of swimmers and we have a lot of depth.
This depth has fueled Scarsdales undefeated season. The Raiders were consistently taking three of the first four places in the meet. Even though the Thundercats led 24-22 through three events, Scarsdale swept the 50 freestyle and took off from there.
The sweep in the 50 free was led by James Freehill and Thomas Cooke, who both covered the distance in 24.26 seconds, with Ethan Zarnow finishing third.
This has been pretty consistent of our team throughout the season, said Lu of Scarsdales top-four showing in each event. Everyones hard work had really paid off.
Zeke Brynin was victorious in the 100 breaststroke for Thundercats. Brynin, who was also a member of the winning 200 individual medley relay team, finished the breaststroke in 1:05.31, edging Scarsdales Matt Ginsberg.
