Peekskill's Brand, 76ers Move On in NBA Playoffs

Peekskill native Elton Brand and the Philadelphia 76ers are moving on to the second round of the NBA playoffs after a 79-76 victory and unlikely 4-2 series win over the No. 1 seed Chicago Bulls.

The Chicago Bulls had been highly favored to knock the 76ers out of the playoffs until injuries claimed star players Derrik Rose and Joakim Noah early in the series. The Bulls struggled to compete with 76ers as the series went on and the 76ers, led by Andre Iguodala and Evan Turner, were able to close out the series in six games.

Brand, the power forward who got his start as a Peekskill Red Devil, scored five points and three rebounds in Thursday's game. Brand attended Duke University after graduating Peekskill High School in 1997 before being drafted No. 1 by the Chicago Bulls. He later played for the Los Angeles Clippers for seven seasons and is in his fourth year with the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 76ers will play the winner of the Boston Celtics—Atlanta Hawks series still in progress.
