TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The No. 1 seed New York Rangers head into the Eastern Division quarterfinals of the playoffs hosting the No. 8 Ottawa Senators Thursday at 7 p.m. at Madison Square Garden. New York completed the National Hockey League regular season Saturday with its best record since winning the 1994 Stanley Cup.
The Broadway Blueshirts compiled 109 points to take the top spot in the Atlantic Division regular season and the top seed in the Eastern Conference. In 2009 and 2011, they lost to the Washington Capitals in the opening round (quarterfinals). In 2010, they failed to make the playoffs.
The Rangers are led by goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, the frontrunner for the Vezina Trophy as the NHLs top goalie. Lundqvist has had his best season with a 39-18-5 record, 1.97 goals-against average and .930 save percentage.
Marian Gaborik led the Rangers in scoring this season with 41 goals, followed by Ryan Callahan with 29 and Brad Richards with 25.
