MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Two giant igloos nestled on the border of Mount Vernon and Pelham, The Ice Hutch sports facility has become the home for area recreation hockey players, high school teams and ice skaters and their coaches drawing lovers of the frozen games from all over Westchester County and the New York metropolitan area.
Ice Hutch Director Ed Witz, who doubles as the coach of the Pelham High School hockey team where he has won 341 games over 26 seasons, said the 56,000 square foot facility is always booked and that there are plans to build another rink sometime in the future to help serve the growing need for ice time.
Were on hold with the building plans right now, said Witz, who has been a partner in the Ice Hutch since it was built in 1997. The place is always busy. Its nonstop.
A chilly beehive of activity, the facility is splashed with advertising banners and team logos attesting to the vast reach in the Westchester community and beyond. The Ice Hutch serves competitive youth and high school hockey programs hockey leagues, clinics and camps, including spring and summer leagues for youngsters and adults. It is home ice to a dozen local high school teams, two college programs, and more than two dozen youth hockey organizations.
Aside from the games and practices, The Ice Hutch offers Learn To Skate classes for all ages and levels, public skating on Saturdays, reserved private skating time, freestyle sessions and open hockey. The facility has hosted several Tier 1 State Championship tournaments, Catholic High School tournaments and league state championships, including the New York State Public High School Regional Championships and the states Empire State Games.
The Ice Hutch venue also has batting cages for softball and baseball and is also a venue for holiday and birthday parties and corporate events. It is located at 655 Garden Avenue in Mount Vernon.
