House of Sports Gauchos Basketball Holds Tryouts

ARDSLEY, N.Y. – The Westchester-based House of Sports Gauchos AAU basketball program opens tryouts for its summer season for players from third grade through eighth grade on March 3 with its “Charge the Court Combine” week of tryouts, while construction of the group’s state-of-the-art sports training facility gets under way in Ardsley.

“We are in the building stage of our sports training facility, House of Sports, in Ardsley, which should be completed late this summer (September),” House of Sports Chief Operating Officer Donald Scherer said. “The complex will have four basketball courts, an indoor soccer surface and the best in training programs for developing soccer, lacrosse, baseball and basketball athletes. We’re excited about Gauchos tryouts and the future of training area athletes.”

The New York Gauchos, a New York City-based and nationally recognized AAU program for more than four decades, is partnering with House of Sports to bring top-flight sports training to Westchester.

Former Duke University player Andy Borman, a nephew of Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, serves as the group’s executive director of basketball and former Rice High School basketball coach and Westchester Hawks Founder and Co-Executive Director Lou DeMello is the athletic director.

The House of Sports Gauchos will call Ardsley High School and the Hackley School its home bases while their home practice facility is being built.

“Charge the Court Combine” will measure athletes with a battery of skills tests that can be compared to other local, regional and national athletes as part of the week of tryouts.

“Andy Borman has a great background as a player at Duke and a Director of Basketball with IMG (sports training academies) and Lou DeMello has been coaching and developing young Westchester and New York City area basketball players for many years,” Scherer said. “House of Sports will be the top sports training program in the area, helping young people develop the fundamentals they need to be successful at each level of their chosen sport.”

DeMello, who won the Catholic Schools and New York State boys basketball championships at Rice, helped develop the Westchester Hawks into Westchester’s largest basketball program.

“Westchester County has lots of talented basketball players who can grow and develop their skills in this new training environment,” DeMello said. “Every player isn’t a Division I player or a potential professional, but with the right training a young person can enjoy competing at any level. We can help prepare an athlete for a successful high school or college career.”
