Luke Gordon said he was really excited for his first time participating in the eighth annual Armonk Baseball League Memorial Day Classic at the Town of North Castle Community Park.
I was hoping I would get an award, said the 10-year-old Gordon, a fourth-grader at Wampus Elementary School. Not only did Gordon earn an award, he won the top prize -- the minors baseball division home run derby.
Gordon, who plays for the Dodgers, would later play and get the starting pitching assignment in the minor-league all-star game.
Each home-run derby participant received six swings against a pitching machine. Gordon said his best drive went about 150 feet.
That one was right in the zone, said Gordon of his lengthy hit. I looked at it and hit it really well.
This was the first time Gordon competed in home run derby. Later in the day he participated in the baseball skills events.
I feel really excited about winning this and I am going to participate in it again next year, Gordon said.
