Fox Lane's Speno in State Semis for Third Time

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Sam Speno earned the Division I (large school) No. 1 seed at 126 pounds for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Championships with an outstanding regular season.

The Fox Lane senior went 42-1, winning the Section 1 126-pound title. It was Speno’s third sectional title.

Speno showed why he is seeded first with a pair of convincing victories on Friday at the state wrestling championships at the Times Union Center.

Wrestling will resume on Saturday at 10 a.m., with the semifinals in both divisions. The championship finals are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Speno, who will face Alec Dierna of Webster Schroeder in a semifinal, will be making his third semifinals appearance. He wrestled in the semis his freshman and junior years finishing fifth and second, respectively. Speno, now 44-1, opened his day with a 9-0 win over Tom Murphy of Monroe-Woodbury, then registered a 19-4 technical fall over Isaiah Perry of Massena.
