Couples Captures Constellation Energy in Playoff

RYE, N.Y. – Fred Couples and John Cook hooked up in a playoff at the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship Sunday and it was Couples who slipped away with the victory as thunderstorms threatened to play through at the Westchester Country Club.

“The back nine played hard all week for me, but I did make some birdies coming in today,” Couples said. "Playing with John was fun. We’ve been buddies for 30 years.”

Tied after 72 holes at 12-under, Couples tapped-in a 3-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole for his first victory of the season and fifth career senior victory.

The Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship is the fifth and final Senior Tour major of the year.

Couples, who led after 36 and 54 holes, went into the final round one stroke ahead of Cook and Australian Peter Senior, who finished at 10-under, one stroke back in third. The personable Couples, who has had back problems over the years and recently underwent a blood-augmenting treatment in Germany, captured his first-ever senior major title.

Cook moved two strokes ahead of Couples on the front nine when strong thunderstorms halted play for nearly two hours before the round resumed. But Cook lost something during the delay and had bogies 11 and 12. Couples birdied the 14th to draw within a stroke and Cook bogied the 16th hole to drop into a tie at 11-under.

“It wasn’t my back but my hip that was tight,” Couples said. “The delay helped a little. I got some of my energy back.”
