CHAPPAQUA, N.Y - Byram Hills was not pleased with itself during halftime of its boys basketball game against host Horace Greeley on Friday.
The Bobcats were trailing by four points, but were most unhappy about their defensive effort. We were kind of disappointed in our defense in the first half, Ryan Golden said. We were not playing great help defense. We were letting guys get by us which led to a lot of easy baskets.
Byram Hills felt the only adjustment it needed to make in the second half was to just dial up the intensity and that is exactly what the Bobcats did. Byram Hills took the lead in the third quarter and blocked a late Greeley surge in a 62-55 victory.
Golden led the 10-3 Bobcats, who swept the season set with the Quakers, with a game-high 20 points, including seven in the third quarter. Byram Hills outscored Greeley, 14-7 in the quarter to take a 43-40 lead through three. Jeff Lynch netted six of his 16 points in the fourth quarter.
We came out a lot and played with a lot more intensity on defense and we played very good team offense, making that extra pass and looking for the open man, Golden said.
The Bobcats led, 51-46 with 4:20 left on the clock and later hiked it to nine points, 57-48, with 2:26 remaining. However, the 7-6 Quakers moved to within four, 59-55, on a Harrison Brown offensive follow with 53.9 seconds to go.
Brown paced the Quakers with 17 points and Justin Ciero added 16 points.
