ARMONK, N.Y. The Byram Hills High School football team will host the Westlake Wildcats on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a battle of great rushing offenses.
Byram Hills had two players rush for triple-digit yards against Port Chester last Saturday in perhaps one of the strangest high school football games in recent memory.
The Bobcats held the advantage in several key offensive categories except the score. Connor Morley ran 29 times for 225 yards and a touchdown and Skylar Simon ran 18 times for 134 yards and a touchdown.
Byram Hills ran 78 plays while Port Chest ran only 26, including just two in the second half. The Rams first play of the second half was an 80-yard kickoff return from Jason Ippolito.
But the second play, which occurred right after the Rams defense stopped Byram Hills on fourth down at the Port Chester five-yard line, turned out to be the crucial one. C.J. Falk took a toss pass from Trevor Chambless and carried it 95 yards to the end zone to give the Rams a 21-20 victory.
Despite the wild loss, Byram Hills showcased its strong and balanced running game. But the Bobcats will face a potentially more devastating combination of rushers when the Wildcats come to town.
Four different rushers scored for Westlake in its 47-12 win against Roosevelt last Saturday, including Dan Bassi, John Ray Policarpio, Jake Carpenter and quarterback Chris Gorman. The offensive line, led by senior Tommy Hopkins, opened up holes for the runners all afternoon and allowed them to eat up huge chunks of yardage.
The game should feature a bevy of talented running backs and each side will likely commit to the running game early and often. The winner will more than likely be the team that figures out how to slow down its opponents ground game.
