Armonk's Binder Siblings Win Medals At National Fencing Championships

ARMONK, N.Y. -- Sylvie Binder earned three medals and brother Zachary Binder won his first national competition medal when the Armonk siblings competed in the United States Fencing Summer Nationals in Columbus, Ohio earlier this month.

Sylvie Binder took fifth place in the 14-year-old age group Division II women’s foil, a third place in the the Y14 women’s foil and another bronze in the Junior women’s foil team competition.

Sylvie Binder is among the nations' top-ranked foil fencers in her age category where she is ranked No. 10. Each of her competitions consisted of more than 100 fencers.

Zachary Binder competed in the 10-year-old age group where he won his first national medal when he fenced his way to a seventh place finish in the Y10 men’s foil competition. The Y10 competition included more than 80 competitors.

Fencing’s tradition is to award medals to the top eight finishers in most individual competitions outside the Olympics. The Summer Nationals included more than 4,000 fencers.

The Binders train at the Fencing Academy of Westchester located in Hawthorne.
