An athletic talent, Toppin attended Mount Zion Prep in Baltimore after graduating Ossining at 6-foot-5.
Toppin averaged 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists this past season at Mount Zion. As a senior in high school, he was selected to the Lower Hudson High School Basketball Coaches Association Conference 1 All-Section Team.
The growth spurt, coupled with Toppin's skills, led to a surge in recruiting interest.
Toppin, who also played football at Ossining, was recruited by Georgetown, Illinois, Mississippi State, Fordham, St. Bonaventure, Quinnipiac, Siena and Rhode Island in addition to Dayton.
"We are very excited to welcome Obadiah to the Dayton Flyer Family," newly named Dayton coach Anthony Grant said. "Obi has an impressive combination of size, skill, and athleticism that really fits our style of play. He is a very humble young man and my staff and I look forward to helping him reach his potential as a student-athlete."
Grant, a former Dayton standout himself who was head coach at Alabama and Virginia Commonwealth and an assistant coach with the NBA's Oklahoma Thunder, replaced Archie Miller as Dayton head coach after Miller left to take the head-coaching job at Indiana.
Dayton was 24-8 overall, and Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season champions with a 15-3 league record. The Flyers set a University of Dayton Arena attendance record, averaging 13,108 fans per game.
