Valhalla Teachers Skipped Raises to Help Budget

VALHALLA, N.Y. – At the Valhalla Union Free School District Board of Education meeting held at Valhalla High School Tuesday night, superintendent Dr. Brenda Myers spoke of the 2 percent tax cap levy limit impacting budget proceedings for 2012-13.

Bill McGuinn, a board member, noted that the teachers agreed to no pay raise for 2012-13, “so we can handle the 2 percent tax levy cap without layoffs.”

The teachers deferred their raises until June 2013, when their pay will increase by about 4 percent, which will result in “a bump in expenditures,” McGuinn said, and force new budget measures next year.

Elementary school principals Ada Parker, from Virginia Road and Matthew Curran, from Kensico, lead off the meeting with reports on their schools. Both reduced the staff by one teacher, saving the school district $33,000 for the Virginia Road part-time music teacher and $79,500 for a full-time teacher at Kensico.

Both principals offered presentations on their schools, highlighting the curriculum and staff developments that have benefited students, from the tech advances at Virginia Road, in which the teachers use iPads, to innovative programs offered at Kensico, including an anti-bullying course.
