Westchester Superintendent Takes Helm of State Group

Eastchester Superintendent of Schools Marilyn Terranova has become president of the 700-member New York State Council of School Superintendents.

Before more than 400 guests gathered at the Hall of Springs in Saratoga including New York State's Commissioner of Education John King, Terranova took her oath of office Sunday evening promising to help create partnerships that advocate for the integration of 21st century skills.

"We must re-think and re-imagine what we do for our students each day," Terranova said. "It takes a heartfelt commitment to focus on 21st century teaching and learning that will see us all through these difficult times. We must define our vision for our students within the context of providing the best education we can—not necessarily with more but with different ideas. Educators lead with their hearts by creating a spirit of community within our schools."

Terranova is also a proponent of global education. She urged her colleagues to "stress courses that emphasize a more global perspective. The opportunities provided our students that focus on service learning in our communities and abroad are essential to success."

Terranova predicted that young people today will face unprecedented change.

"They will face global challenges from emerging nations," she said. "Inevitably, our next generation will be confronted with competing ideas, arguments and information that may be different from our own beliefs. It is our moral obligation to help students sort out those competing ideas, arguments and beliefs. Our students must learn how to survive and lead amidst a variety of challenges in an increasingly diverse, global environment."
