WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - With Operation Safe Stop - a crackdown on motorists that fail to stop for school buses - scheduled for Thursday, state police in Northern Westchester County got a head start by conducting a special school enforcement detail on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, April 25, state police conducted the enforcement detail in and around schools in Lewisboro, North Salem and Somers, leading to a total of 35 tickets for motorists in those districts for various violations.

In total, there were 17 tickets issued for seatbelt violations, three cell phone violators, five motorists speeding in a school zone and 13 other tickets issued for other vehicle and traffic violations.

As previously reported by Daily Voice, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Operation Safe Stop, where police will use marked and unmarked patrol vehicles on certain bus routes that have a history of illegal passing complaints.

In the last four years, 35 students were hit by motorists illegally passing school buses and it is estimated that more than 50,000 drivers illegally passed school buses illegally throughout the state every day.
