New York spent $20,610 per student-the most on education per pupil-in 2014 the census bureau reported, according to lohud.com.
New York has held this distinction for many years and is spending $24.8 billion on 700 school districts this fiscal year, which is a 6.5 percent increase from 2013, according to lohud.com.
Census data revealed a 4 percent increase per pupil from 2013 to 2014. Nationally there was a 2.7 percent increase in per pupil spending with $11,009 spent on average. Utah spent the least out of the other 49 states at $6,500 per pupil, according to lohud.com.
The other big-spending states from 2014 include the District of Columbia where $18,485 was spent per pupil, Alaska at $18,416, and neighboring New Jersey at $17,907 and Connecticut at $17,745, to round out the top five, according to lohud.com.
