Devary enlisted in the 82nd Airborne in 1999, and was deployed for duty in 2002 to Afghanistan and in 2004 was stationed in Iraq. Patrolling along a 7.5 mile stretch of road linking downtown Baghdad to the airport, Devary ensured the 24 members of his platoon ended their year deployment without any of them getting killed in action. Unfortunately, 19 soldiers in his battalion were killed that year on what was considered by many the most dangerous road in the world.
Since his retirement in 2006, Devary has been involved in numerous veterans rehabilitation programs. Most notably, he has supported Pace University's 'Combat to Classroom' and 'Classroom to Career' initiatives, designed to help combat veterans complete their studies upon returning home.
Staff Sergeant Devary was recognized by the team at center court, where he was handed a number 15 jersey by former Knicks Allan Houston. Prior to the game, he toured the Knicks practice facility in Tarrytown and met head coach Derek Fisher as well as many players.
