ARMONK, N.Y. About 220 sixth graders at H.C. Crittenden Middle School participated in the sixth annual Power of One Day 2012 on Tuesday. Students attended one of 19 programs that teach the power of the individual to create positive change, according to Mary Staudt, a sixth grade teacher who coordinated the event with Sheila St. Onge, a social studies teacher.
The programs covered issues ranging from curing cancer to animal rights, and were taught by teachers or community members. Some are affiliated with organizations including Amnesty International and the SPCA of Westchester.
After attending the programs, students participated in a play, Speak Truth to Power and music students sang motivational songs.
During lunch period students raised money for pediatric cancer research at Alexs Lemonade Stand and conducted a bake sale to raise funds for other charities.
North Castle Town Board Member Michael Schiliro taught Save Earth: Go Green and Compost, which taught students how to build their own backyard composter that creates reusable materials for their gardens.
I show them how easy and economical it is to build a composter, Schiliro said. They can collect biodegradable kitchen garbage, collect it in bags made out of corn and mix it with leaves to create soil for the garden. It also saves the town money by reducing the amount of garbage thats collected.
