Agent Traded Late Nights for Real Estate

Carol Dorado considers herself a "big foodie," and her dream growing up was to be a restaurateur. After studying restaurant management at The New School in Manhattan, Carol was hired at the Renaissance Hotel in White Plains. It wasn't long before she discovered that working in a restaurant wasn't as much fun as she'd expected. "There were a lot of late nights," she says, "And I didn't enjoy them at all."

Her next job focused on what many think of as an integral part of dining: wine. Hired by a Spanish wine importer, she sold wine to restaurants and wine stores. "I took the Windows on the World wine course," Carol says, adding that she also learned a lot about wine on the job. Her favorite white wine is Alberiño from Galicia, and she likes red Riojas.

These days, Carol is still a salesperson, but now she sells houses. "I basically fell into real estate," she says, describing how she always used to stop to look in the windows of a real estate office on her way home from the train station. When she spotted a sign advertising a seminar on becoming an agent, she signed up. Two months later she got her license.

Carol works out of the Houlihan Lawrence office in White Plains and covers a wide territory, from lower Westchester up through the river towns. Having grown up in White Plains she knows the area well, and as an Ossining resident she's comfortable in the western reaches of Westchester county. "I really enjoy my work," she says. "I wish I'd got into it earlier in my life."
