There Should Be No Food Stamps For Lobster, Steak, Junk Food, Lawmaker Says

A new proposal seeks to further curb the use of food stamps by prohibiting stamps' use to buy for high-end luxury food like steak and lobster as well as junk food such as soda and candy, according to the Press and Sun Bulletin.

The bill, introduced Wednesday by state Sen. Patty Ritchie, an Oswegatchie Republican, would place additional limits on the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Though it cites several examples of items to exclude, the bill calls on state bureaucrats to develop a comprehensive list, the Press & Sun Bulletin reports.

Food stamp recipients are already blocked from using assistance to buy tobacco and alcohol, as required by federal law. The forecast is cloudy for the bill's future in the Democratic-controlled state Assembly, the Press & Sun Bulletin reports, since Democrats have typically opposed such restrictions.
