'Super Tuesday Two' Results Should Be Telling, Says Marist Poll

Donald Trump remains in the lead in Florida and Illinois, where the presidential primaries are being held Tuesday, March 15, according to the latest Marist poll.

In Illinois, Trump, who owns a mansion in Bedford and golf clubs in Briarcliff Manor and Hopewell Junction, was leading Texas Sen. Ted Cruz 34 to 25 percent among the state’s likely Republican primary voters, the Marist poll said.

In Florida, Trump holds a 2-to-1 advantage among likely GOP voters over Marco Rubio, the state's U.S. senator, 43 percent to 22 percent. They are followed by Ted Cruz at 21 percent and John Kasich at nine percent.

Meanwhile, the billionaire businessman was a strong second in John Kasich’s home turf of Ohio, where a primary is also being held Tuesday, the poll found.

The governor had the support of 39 percent of likely voters, while Trump came in at 33 percent, the Marist poll found.

On the Democratic side, Chappaqua resident and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton was way ahead of rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in both Florida and Ohio, the Marist poll said.

Things were a little tighter in Illinois.

According to the Marist poll, Clinton was pulling 61 percent to Sanders’ 34 percent among likely Democratic voters in Florida, including the undecideds.

In Ohio, Clinton had the support of 58 percent of those polled, as opposed to Sanders’ 38 percent, the poll found.

In Illinois, the former first lady just squeezed ahead of Sanders’ 45 percent by six points, also including the undecideds.

“Coming out of ‘Super Tuesday Round Two,’ we should know whether Hillary Clinton has regained her momentum to go along with her current delegate lead,” said Lee M. Miringoff, director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion in Poughkeepsie. “ We should also have a better sense of whether Donald Trump is on the path to his party’s nomination or whether the GOP is staring at a contested convention in this unprecedented election cycle.”
