Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is running for the Democratic nomination for president, will be hosting a rally at McCann Arena at Marist College in Poughkeepsie on Tuesday afternoon ahead of the April 19 New York primary. Doors open at 4 p.m.

Sanders will be joined by singer Michael Stipe, formerly of the band R.E.M.

The Vermont senator is coming to Poughkeepsie in the midst of a hotly contested primary with frontrunner Hillary Clinton, who previously served as senator from New York. Sanders has won 7 of the last 8 contests, though he trails Clinton by a large margin in delegates.

Candidates have been appearing throughout the Hudson Valley ahead of the primary. Clinton recently held a campaign rally at SUNY Purchase, while Gov. John Kasich held a rally at Iona College and gave a speech in Rockland County

The Sanders campaign is asking that attendees do not bring bags and limit what they bring to small personal items like keys and cell phones. Weapons, sharp objects, chairs, and signs or banners on sticks will not be allowed through security. Limited parking is available on site. Carpooling is encouraged.
