Groceries To Go Proposed In North Castle

ARMONK, N.Y. – North Castle area shoppers could find grocery shopping at the North White Plains Stop & Shop more convenient if a plan for a parking lot pickup service is approved.

Representatives from the grocery store chain made a presentation last week to the North Castle Planning Board for a grocery pick-up point they propose to be constructed in the parking lot.

“Circulation in the parking lot is something that I think needs to be worked on,” said Director of Planning Adam Kaufman. “But, other than that, I think it would be a great service to the community.”

The proposed pickup point features an overhead canopy in the parking lot near the front entrance of the store on North Broadway. The canopy will be associated with an outside service called Peapod, through which residents can order groceries from Stop & Shop either online or over the phone and schedule a time to pick them up.

Representatives from Stop & Shop said that the service requires customers to pay at the time they order and that the pick-up process should take around five minutes.  The proposed canopy in North White Plains would feature spots for four cars.  Next to each spot would be a call box to allow the customer to speak with a worker inside the store to let them know to bring out the groceries.

Kaufman suggested to Stop & Shop, which is represented by attorney Noelle Wolfson from Hocherman, Tortorella and Wekstein law firm, that it conduct a traffic survey to look at the circulation within the parking lot with the added canopy.

Robert Greene, chairman of the North Castle Planning Board, was confident that the proposed site plan would eventually be approved.

“I’m familiar with Stop & Shop and I think they are one of the more successful operations and this will be one of the only operations of its kind in the area,” Greene said.

Representatives with Stop & Shop said that the nearest Peapod pickup location of this kind is in Massachusetts.

The Planning Board voted to set a public hearing to discuss and vote on the Peapod canopy site plan for its public meeting on Aug. 6.
