Four In Race For Westchester District Attorney

The possibility that Gov. Andrew Cuomo may step in and fill the position left open by Janet DiFiore’s appointment to the state’s top judgeship has not deterred four candidates from running for Westchester County district attorney, The New York Times reported.

The post, widely seen as a stepping stone to higher office, is being sought (so far) by two Republicans – Mitch Benson and Bruce Bendish – and two Democrats – George E. Fufidio Jr. and Anthony A. Scarpino, The New York Times reported.

DiFiore, a Democrat, became the chief judge of the state Court of Appeals in January and acting District Attorney James A. McCarty, has said he won't seek the office, according to multiple media reports.

Anyone tapped by the governor would likely have a leg up in the fall contest, especially in a county where Democratic voters outnumber Republicans 2-to-1, The New York Times reported.

The four hopefuls have years of experience as lawyers, in law enforcement, and in the judiciary, The New York Times reported.
