Cuomo Sets Date For Special Election To Replace Sheldon Silver

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo told reporters on Tuesday that a special election will likely be held on April 19 -- the day of the state’s presidential primary -- to replace former Assemblyman Sheldon Silver, according to the New York State of Politics.

Cuomo said in the wake of Monday's verdict that found Silver guilty on seven counts of corruption in a case stemming from his receiving bribes that had been masked as legal referrals, that he hopes lawmakers will take seriously new ethics legislation, said the New York State of Politics.

Cuomo defended his own push to pass anti-corruption measures, saying that, the system worked with the Silver conviction, reported the nystateofpolitics.com.

Silver, Cuomo said, was an example of breaking the law and being caught.
