A resident of Black Birch Lane in Scarsdale reported to police on Sunday afternoon that he had been taken for $700 in gift cards. He stated that he was exchanging emails with an account he believed to be his boss, who requested that he purchase seven Apple Store cards for $100 each.
The man proceeded to do so, and in a subsequent email, he was told to scratch off the serial numbers on the back of the cards, photograph the number and email them back. When he was unable to email the information, he was told to text the photos to a different phone. The victim did so, and later found out that his boss had never sent any emails.
According to police, the victim found out that every employee at his firm received similar fraudulent emails from the false account, and his boss reported the information to police investigators in Port Chester. When he contacted Apple, the victim was told that all seven cards had been drained.
After speaking with police, the victim spoke with his credit card company in an effort to be credited for the $700. The incident is under police investigation.
