WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Applications are now available for Westchester County residents interested in taking the Nov. 17 civil service exam for police officer.
Administered by Westchester County, the test is given every four years. Deadline to apply is June 26, and applications can be picked up from the county's Department of Human Resources, 148 Martine Ave., Suite 100, or downloaded on its website.
Those who pass the test are ranked by their score and hired as positions become available in municipal police departments, excluding Yonkers, White Plains, New Rochelle and Mount Vernon. The county Department of Public Safety also hires from the list of passing applicants.
The exam will be held in several locations. The application fee is $50, and bilingual applicants may apply for the Police Office (Spanish Speaking) test, which requires an additional fee.
To apply for either test, applicants must be:
- Westchester residents for at least one month prior to the date of the exam;
- Hold a high school diploma or GED;
- Be under the age of 35 (unless a veteran of the Armed Forces as defined by New York State law).
While applicants under age 20 may take the test, they cannot be appointed until they turn 20.
