Scarpino announced Thursday that Zachary Tokson, 27, has been sentenced to an indeterminate sentence of three to nine years in state prison after pleading guilty to three felony charges related to a 2015 accident.
According to Scarpino, shortly before 6 a.m. on Dec. 15, 2015, Tokson was driving his Lexus northbound in the southbound lanes of I-684 in Bedford when he struck his victim’s station wagon, killing her instantly from blunt force trauma injuries.
Tokson suffered a laceration over his eye, while a passenger in his car suffered serious injuries that required hospitalization, including broken ribs, a dislocated femur and lacerations to her liver and spleen. She survived the crash.
Following a police investigation, it was determined that Tokson had been drinking at a bar hours earlier in Brewster. After leaving the bar, he stopped for food, proceeded south on I-684 and stopped at the Bedford Rest Area to take a nap.
Scarpino stat that Tokson then woke up and began driving the wrong way for more than a mile on I-684 before the collision, according to police. A search of his vehicle yielded an empty bottle of whiskey and a mixed drink inside a closed water bottle. He was charged with felony charges of aggravated vehicular manslaughter, manslaughter and second-degree vehicular assault. Tokson has been remanded into the custody of the New York State Department of Corrections.
