Westchester Residents Shocked by Tissue Box Recall

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. – Westchester residents were startled that metal tissue boxes in the Port Chester Bed Bath and Beyond store were contaminated with a radioactive element. However, they returned to shopping without any fears because the boxes had been removed.

“I was very surprised,” said Paul Anderson of Mamaroneck while shopping at the Port Chester Bed Bath and Beyond store. “I guess they didn’t know about it.”

Anderson first read about the tissue boxes in the newspaper. The Mamaroneck resident was glad to see that all of the affected tissues boxes had been removed.

The tissue boxes contained traces of Cobalt 60, which was likely fused into the metal covers during the smelting process, according to the New York State’s Department of Health and Office of Emergency Management.

The Bed Bath and Beyond store in Elmsford also carried a shipment of the tissue boxes, but they had been removed from that store as well. No customers bought any of the boxes, which were all removed on Thursday.

Overall, 220 of the boxes were sent throughout the country and just eight ended up in Westchester County. The delivery apparently originated in India and the products were  sent to the United States on Dec. 27.

Judy Itzler felt safe shopping at the store because “it’s not a problem anymore.” The Rye Brook resident was surprised by the issue, but was pleased to see that it was taken care of.

Nancy Scofield enjoys shopping at the Bed, Bath, and Beyond store, and was stunned to hear about the radiation.

“Wow, I was shocked, but I’m safe now,” said the Port Chester resident. “It’s a good store. It’s my favorite store as a matter of fact.”
