IRVINGTON, N.Y. Law enforcement agencies throughout Westchester and Putnam counties will be conducting safety checks throughout the area during the upcoming Easter and Passover holidays as part of a continuing counter-terrorism operation.
Between Thursday and Sunday evening, police will conduct periodic security checks of train stations, bus routes, commuter parking lots, parks, malls and other places where holiday events may take place. Counter Terrorism Zone 3 Chair and Irvington Police Chief Michael Cerone noted in a press release that the increased police presence does not mean there is a renewed threat to residents' safety.
It is simply part of our counter-terrorism strategy of continued vigilance, he said.
Cerone urged residents to be mindful of behavior that does not match usual patterns and to follow some simple guidelines:
- Do not confront the individual(s)
- Do not reveal your suspicions to the individual(s)
- Record as many details as possible
- Notify local police by calling 911 or their direct number. Residents can also call the New York State tipline at 1-866-723-3697.
