SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. First responders will be honored Thursday by the Westchester Regional EMS Council during the 39th Annual EMS Awards Ceremony.
EMS providers throughout the county will gather at Sleepy Hollow High School for the ceremony. The council includes 70 ambulance and first-reponse agencies, 11 hospitals and more than 20,000 emergency responders.
Often in the face of great peril, these emergency service workers and concerned citizens have brought skill and determination to help others in need, often with amazing results. said Chris Kalish, chairman of the counci's Public Information and Education Committee.
Arlene Testa, Transcare EMT and former Harrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps captain, will be awarded the EMT of the Year award.
Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps members Joseph Bucchignano and Gary Conklin will receive the Paramedic of the Year award and EMS Volunteer of the Year award, respectively, Conklin is also a member of the OVAC Board of Directors. Fellow Ossining EMT Joyce Wilson will receive the EMS Educator of Excellence award.
Robert Figoria, a Yonkers resident and St. Joseph's Hospital nurse manager, will receive the Registered Professional Nurse of Excellence Award.
Scott Moore, Port Chester, Rye, Rye Brook EMS administrator, will receive the EMS Leadership Award for his work with PCRRBEMS.
The Cortlandt Volunteer Ambulance Corps has been named the EMS Agency of the Year.
Harrison resident Silvanio Dossantos will be awarded the Civilian Award for his response to a car accident on I-684, where he helped a woman with life-threatening injuries by keeping her head above the water after she had been struck and thrown over the side of a bridge.
Meritorious Service awards will be given to Domenick DiRienzo, an EMT with the Eastchester Fire Department; Robert Monetta, a paramedic with Westchester EMS; Mark Sfarra, a paramedic with Westchester EMS; and Richard Waterbury, a first assistant chief with Westchester EMS.
David Berry, William Hecker and Dennis Reilly of the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services will receive emergency medical dispatcher citations.
Unit Citations will be given to the Armonk Fire Department, Fairview Fire Department Technical Rescue Team, Greenburgh Police Technical Rescue Team, Hastings-on-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Corps, Purchase Fire Department, St. John's Emergency Department, Westchester EMS and the White Plains Fire Department.
