WESTCHESTER, N.Y. The Westchester County Department of Public Safety is searching for park rangers to work at the local parks this summer. They are accepting applications, which are available online at http://www.westchestergov.com/ps, until February 24.
The Westchester County Police Department supervises the rangers and they are expected to maintain a safe and enjoyable atmosphere in the countys parks, according to a press release emailed to Main Street Connect by Kieran OLeary, spokesman for the Westchester County police.
OLeary stated that the position could be valuable to those who want to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Many police officers in Westchester, including our Police Commissioner George Longworth, worked as park rangers before choosing law enforcement as a career, said OLeary. The experience has helped many young people considering a law enforcement career to decide whether it is right for them.
The Department of Public Safety hires approximately 75 summer park rangers, according to OLeary.
Most are college students, and about half the rangers each year have worked for us in a previous summer or summers, said OLeary.
In order to be eligible, the applicant must be a high school graduate, at least 19 years old, a resident of Westchester County, and have a valid New York State drivers license, according to the press release. For those who are first-time park rangers, they are paid $14 per hour. The candidates who are accepted must take part in a two-week training program at the Westchester County Police Academy.
