Warning Issued For Scammers Posing As State Tax Collectors

Scammers are manipulating caller ID by using actual state phone numbers in an attempt to convince people that incoming calls are legitimate, according to a warning by the New York State tax department.

The Albany-based numbers of 518-457-0578 or 518-457-5181, which are being utilized by the scammers, are only used for incoming calls going directly to their representatives, the state tax department said.

Those posing as tax department reps have been saying that payments must be made using gift cards or other debit cards.
