ARMONK, N.Y. - Gaining National Semifinalist recognition by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and being chosen to participate in M.I.T.s MITES program are outstanding accomplishments on their own, but Julian Guy of Valhalla High School achieved both. Guy, a senior, scored 235 out of 240 on his PSAT in the fall of 2010, getting him into the running to become a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, which could win him a $2,500 scholarship.
At eighth grade graduation someone told me you should get national merit because then you can get full tuition to school, Guy said. I thought maybe I should try to pursue this, so I went through my SAT book and went through as many tests as I could to prepare for the PSAT.
Valhalla Director of Guidance Andy Kupec is excited for Guy and hopes the National Merit Scholarship Corporation rewards him for his hard work.
We work with Julian as a school to prepare for the comp Its very very competitive. To reach this level is awesome, if he can go any further its going to be great for the school, Kupec said. Ive been here a long time and this guy ranks among our top students in a long while. He brings a lot to the table and hes a wonderful young man.
MITs M.I.T.E.S program (Minority Introduction to Engineering Sciences), which Guy attended this summer, gave him a chance to experience academics at the college level. The kids were amazing everyone was motivated and dedicated to learning. Everyone was engaged and focused so it was a really good environment, Guy said.
