U.S. Fines Westchester $1.1M For Delays In Complying With Water Regulations

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Westchester County has agreed to pay a $1.1 million fine for its delay in complying with federal drinking water regulations for Mount Vernon, Scarsdale, White Plains, and Yonkers, according to White Plains U.S. District Court records.

The settlement was filed Thursday, and applies to Water District No. 1 – which serves Mount Vernon, Scarsdale, White Plains, and Yonkers.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had filed the federal court case against Westchester County.

Westchester officials have a little less than a month to pay the required $1,108,771 fine, according to court records.

The county must also complete construction of two ultraviolet water treatment systems in White Plains – one at the Central Avenue pumping station and the other at the Orchard Street pumping station, court records show.

It should cost Westchester no more than $691,000 to comply with those provisions of the settlement, according to court records.
