'To Kill A Mockingbird' Author Harper Lee Dies At 89

Harper Lee, author of "To Kill a Mockingbird," has died, according to multiple reports. She was 89.

Officials in Monroeville, Ala., where Lee lived, confirmed her death, but did not say where or when it occurred, The New York Times said. 

"To Kill a Mockingbird" was Lee's first novel and has sold more than 10 million copies since being published in 1960. The novel, which has become one of the most taught works of literature, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1961, The New York Times reported. 

Following the success of "Mockingbird," Lee became something of a recluse, releasing her second work, "Go Set a Watchman," in 2015. The book is set 20 years after "Mockingbird," but was a manuscript Lee had submitted to publishers in 1957, The New York Times said.
