Supermarket Bus Service For North Castle Seniors

ARMONK, N.Y. – North Castle Town Council member Diane Roth met with North Castle Recreation Department officials on Thursday to plan supermarket bus service for seniors once the A&P closes.

Roth said she'll present her idea to the town board at the next meeting in an effort to get funds authorized to pay for the service, which would include additional pay for the bus driver and gas money.

Joyce Graefe, the senior driver, currently works 20 hours a week. She said she plans to provide service once a week to seniors in Armonk and North White Plains who request rides to a supermarket. Graefe will pick them up at their homes, take them to the Stop & Shop in North White Plains and return them home. She'll also help them carry grocery bags into their homes.

Graefe's bus holds 12 seniors, but fewer with groceries, she said. She plans to determine how many need the service after the A&P closes, which could be next week.

Additional trips can be planned if more seniors need the service, Roth added.

Roth said the bus service would be very valuable to seniors, since many currently walk to the A&P and will not be close to a supermarket once the A&P closes.

"This is a big thing for seniors, it changes their lives," Roth said.
