MAMARONECK, N.Y. Before Jim Killoran can lead the Sound Shore St. Patrick's Day Parade down Mamaroneck Avenue March 18, he will need his grand marshal sash.
Monday, Michael Hynes, parade co-chairperson and owner of Molly Spillane's, will officially present it to Killoran, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Westchester. Hynes will present the sash, along with the Sound Shore St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, a group of local Irish-Americans who organized this inaugural parade.
"It's my faith that motivates me to do what I do," Killoran said. "They're recognizing me for doing what I selfishly do every day, which is help people. It doesn't make sense, but it's true."
The humble humanitarian has his hands in projects throughout the county that help people struggling for decent, low-income housing. Habitat for Humanity has completed 50 new homes, and rehabbed over 200 homes for area flood victims, families, seniors and veterans, with the help of thousands of volunteers.
Many of those volunteers are high school students who belong to a Habitat for Humanity club, and will be walking with Killoran in the March 18 parade. The Mamaroneck High School club is asking its members to raise money through its walk.
Students from Solomon Schecter, New Rochelle, Blessed Sacrament, Iona Prep, Byram Hills, Yonkers High School, and others will be marching with Killoran, The presentation of the grand marshal sash will be held at Molly Spillane's this Monday at 1 p.m.
"In a way, this is a tribute to my mother and father, and all the Irish," he said.
