Slow Start no Cause for Alarm at Armonk Pool

ARMONK, N.Y. – Lifeguards at the Ehrman Pool in Armonk know as long as the 400,000-gallon, heated pool is open, people will come.

"Once July kicks in, it always gets really busy," said Adam Mcaule, a fourth-year lifeguard and recent Byram Hills High School graduate. "We get a lot of little kids coming in so the lifeguards really have to keep an eye on them."

The Ehrman Pool opened up for the 2011 summer season on June 18. Since then, the weather hasn't been as warm as previous weeks. However Mcauley said the slow start was expected and business would soon pick up.

"This pool is a popular place for kids in Armonk,” he said.

In the heat of July, Mcauley said the pool could see as many as 200 kids and parents each day. While people visit to swim, others are there for birthday parties or swim and diving team practices.

"A typical busy day consists of at least two birthday parties, swim teams, dive teams and huge crowds," Mcauley said.

A day with high capacity could lead to as many as three lifeguards watching the pool at any given time. By mid-July, Mcauley said the pool frequently reaches near-full capacity.

The lifeguard staff consists of mostly high school students who Mcauley said, many who are on their high school’s swim team. Mcauley competed on the Byram Hills swimming and diving team.

"I'm really happy to work here," Mcauley said. "It's so much more than just sitting in the lifeguard chair."

The pool is open every day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. until July 4. After the holiday the pool starts to open an hour later on weekdays.

Different programs are offered throughout the season, including swimming lessons and workout clinics. A guest fee for the pool is $10 per person. Children under five are free.
