WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. Once again, an uninvited guest has made it unsafe for residents to swim or participate in recreational activities in the Hudson River.
The Westchester County Department of Health via Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino has issued a statement Monday that advises all residents to avoid contact with the Hudson River at any point south of Tarrytown until further notice.
The statement comes after the department of environmental facilities discovered a sewage discharge entering the Hudson from the North Yonkers Pump Station, following the heavy rains during Tropical Storm Irene. The water volume in the pump station became too high and dislodged a manhole, which caused the sewage water to be pumped into the Hudson.
The department of environmental facilities is currently working to resolve the issue.
The department of health is mostly warning all residents that use the Hudson for recreational purposes such as swimming, boating, kayaking and windsurfing. Samples will be taken from the water and the health department will issue an updated advisory in the near future based on these results.
In July, sewage dumping into the Hudson was discovered at a wastewater treatment plant in New York City and the water was deemed unsafe for recreational use for almost a week.
