Romney Declared GOP Primary Winner in New York

With the majority of primary votes tallied across the state, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney looks to add to his already sizable lead.

The Associated Press called New York for Romney shortly after polls closed after determining he already had the votes needed to win the state. As of 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday with 63 percent of votes recorded, Romney had approximately 60 percent of the vote.

Romney was declared winner over former House Speaker and Georgia Rep. Newt Gingrich and longtime Texas Rep. Ron Paul.  Former Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum is also on the ballot even though he officially dropped out of the race several weeks ago.

The Associated Press has already called Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Delaware and Connecticut for Romney as of Tuesday evening.

Romney, 65, was born and raised in Michigan and was the son of former Michigan Gov. George Romney. A Mormon, he spent time in his youth as a missionary in Europe.

Romney made a name for himself in the business field, most notably as the founder and CEO of the private equity investment firm Bain Capitol. He also drew praise for helping to oversee the committee that organized the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City after a bribery scandal and a lack of funding threatened to derail the games early on.

Romney ran an unsuccessful bid for United States Senate in Massachusetts against the late Sen. Ted Kennedy in 1994 but would later become governor of the state in 2002. While in office, he worked to cut state spending and reduce the state’s $3 billion deficit.

In 2006, he voted to approve the Massachusetts Health Care Insurance Reform Law, which required almost all state residents to have some kind of health insurance and allowed the state to provide free or reduced cost health care to the state’s poorest residents.

Romney already had 685 of the necessary 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination for president before Tuesday's primaries. Gingrich had 136 and Paul had 63.
